JAISALMER TOURS GUIDE
JAISALMER TOURIST INFORMATION :-

Jaisalmer stands tall in the desolate beauty of the
desert, proudly welcoming visitors to an enchanting
world of fable, color, and history. The view of
Jaisalmer Fort, first seen from a distance of 15 km is
stunning. In the early morning the ramparts, bastions
and the long stretching walls dazzle gloriously. The
yellow sandstone fortifications look magnificent. It is
one of the most exotic cities of the Orient, standing in
the heart of the desert for centuries, weathering with
fortitude the vicissitudes of fortune and furious
onslaughts of nature. The sudden emergence of the
76-meter high rock in the flat desert country crowned by
the most awe-inspiring fort makes a majestic sight.
Today, Jaisalmer is the personification of the old order
influence the new.
JAISALMER HISTORY :-
The history of spectacular Jaisalmer can be traced back
to 1156 A.D., when Rawal Jaisal established his kingdom
in the middle of the massive and arid Thar Desert. A
descendant of the Yadu Vamsi clan, Rawal Jaisal was a
Bhatti Rajput. The Bhatti Rajputs were more than
courageous. According to a popular legend, Lord Krishna
had prophesized that a descendant of the Yadav clan
would establish his bastion atop the Trikuta hill and
true to his prediction Rawal Jaisal built the massive
Jaisalmer Fort on top of the Trikuta hillock. Jaisalmer
became an important city on the Rajasthan map during the
medieval era as it lay on a crucial and flourishing
foreign trade route that connected India to Egypt,
Persia, Arabia, Africa and the West. The kingdom of
Jaisalmer supposedly amassed riches by imposing heavy
tariffs on passing camel caravans carrying silks, spices
and other precious items for trade from one continent to
the other. Courage, valor and regal determination turned
Jaisalmer into one of the most powerful Rajasthan states
that survived inspite of being a waterless land. In fact
entire Jaisalmer had just one water source in the olden
days and that was the manmade Gadi Sagar Tank. The
history of Jaisalmer is marked by royal intrigues, wars
and desert romances.

gaiety and fervor to invoke divine blessings as well as
for the sheer joy of living. A celebration of life at
its best.
Desert Festival : A spectacular event which takes place
in the month of Jan/Feb. The rich culture of the region
is on display during this three day long festival. The
famous Gair and Fire dancers are the major attraction of
the celebrations. Interesting contests including a tying
competition and a Mr. Desert contest further enhance the
fun of the occasion. A trip to the Sam sand dunes marks
the grand finale, where one can enjoy camel rides and
brilliant performance by the folk artist under the full

JAISALMER SHOPPING :-

The camels and gypsies that pass you by lend an
atmosphere to the place similar to ancient Arabia and
the alfresco shops which dot the area sell everything
from clothes to bedspreads to toys to the famous
culinary delight of Jaisalmer, ghotua (bright yellow
candy balls). and since the Jaisalmeris love for
jewellery is legendary you’ll come across paraphernalia
of silver ornaments designed for different parts of the
female body, the nose, the head, fingers, ears, ankles
and even a decoration called chupara for the teeth. The
beautiful handicraft items are irresistible.The
embroidery on garments interspersed with mirror work is
unmatched. Besides garment linen, tapestry, small
pouches for carrying money are the most sought after
souvenirs. Also available are the traditional rugs,
camel wool blankets, and shawls. The beautiful wooden
boxes, silver jewellery, trinkets and curios are a good
buy. The colourfully embroidered covers for the camel
back can be seen nowhere else in the world.
JAISALMER CUISINE :-
Jaisalmer is a centre for typically fiery Rajasthani
cuisine. The use of red chilli and ginger is liberal and
each preparation has its own uniquely piquant flavour.
Hot favourites are the famed gatta curry, macchi/maas
sulas, lal/safed maas and the ever present ker-sangri.
The dal-bati-choorma is available though not very
distinctive. An integral part of the cuisine is the
soul-stirring local music, accompanied by graceful
dancing. For people with an incurable sweet tooth, on
offer are a variety of gramflour and milk sweetmeats
which are guaranteed to tempt even the most jaded
palate.
JAISALMER ENTERTAINMENT :-

Camel Safari of Jaisalmer : A large number of travel
agents and tour operators in Rajasthan organise camel
safaris. Most of these are in the vicinity of Jaisalmer,
Bikaner, Osian and Khimsar, and stretch from anywhere
between 2 to 7 days, with longer ones of up to a month.
Shorter, day-long camel safaris which just about give
you a glimpse of the desert are also organised. The
majority of camel safaris start from the desert fort
town of Jaisalmer. In most cases, one camel is provided
per person, and a camel cart accompanies the entourage,
laden with food, utensils and other supplies; it’s also
an option for anyone who gets sick of sitting on a
lurching camel. Tents, food, mineral water, mattresses
and an escort are invariably provided, and most
operators will also make sure you get a full dose of
local entertainment in the evenings. For longer camel
safaris, which cover a few days, camps are usually set
up at night in the vicinity of villages.
